2WT fly rods are perfect for catching small fish species. These are typically used by experienced or well-trained anglers who love creek fishing. Additionally, a 2wt fly rod is exceptionally fun when it comes to tiring and harassing small fish compared to 3wt rods.

In short, 5 weight fly rods are widely regarded as the best all round choice for anglers; And for a good reason. From delicate casts in small mountain streams to battling 20″ trout in larger rivers and lakes, 5 weight fly rods are versatile enough to handle a variety of fly fishing scenarios.

Rod length for trout fishing should be 8.5 to 9 feet. Beginners won’t want to go longer and should only go shorter if they’re mainly fishing for smaller fish like panfish.
Therefore the 2wt is ideal for catching small fish.
The dry flies and soft hackles I cast range from size 20 flies to size 14 nymphs – a 2-weight cuts a fine figure in this selection of fish and flies.
Recommended fly rods for panfish fly fishing
A 3 or 4 rod (or even lighter) not only makes every catch a bit more challenging, it also helps with the presentation of small and delicate flies. Really any good 5 or 6 weight rod will do excellently for panfish such as bluegill and other small species.
While lightweight rods can work well for trout fishing, ultra-lightweight rods can give you a better experience. Although occasionally costing a little more, ultralight rods improve casting with lighter lures, increase sensitivity when a fish bites and make trout reeling in more challenging and fun.
To catch big and bad trout streamers we recommend a 9′ 6wt or 7wt. The heavier rod helps when casting heavy sinking lines and large flies. It also makes hooking with heavy hooks easier as they require more strength to hold on.
A 6 weight fly rod is the perfect freshwater rod for casting streamers, dry flies and nymphs. It is the middle ground between lighter rods (3 to 5 wt) and heavier fly rods from 7 wt. Six weights can be set up for all size trout, all size perch and smaller salmon and steelhead.
Fly Rods: A 9 foot, 8 or 9 weight rod with a medium or tip flex action will handle most bony fishing situations. When the majority of bonefish are large, as in the Florida Keys, a 9 weight outfit is your best bet.
