Spoiler alert: Natascha is gone. In Avengers: Endgame, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) sacrificed herself in Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone and helped undo the Thanos snapshot that disintegrated 50% of the universe.
Scarlett Johansson, who played Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2010-2021, is returning to the franchise. However, she will not be reprising her role as Black Widow, which makes sense given the events of Avengers: Endgame.
For those who forgot, Natasha died in the middle of Avengers: Endgame while searching for Vormir with Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner). There, the two Avengers were told that one of them would have to sacrifice his life to get the Infinity Stone that resides on this planet.
The truth is, nothing has been confirmed about a Black Widow sequel yet. As the film has been set, it looks like Black Widow will be a standalone film, meaning a sequel film isn’t necessary. However, we’re still not fully closing our doors to the possibility of Black Widow 2.
The story in Loki is set to begin right after this moment, meaning it will begin in 2012. So not only is this Loki a far cry from the brave, selfless hero he became in the original timeline, it also means that there is a very much alive Black Widow years away from her death in 2023 is.
The MCU may be done with Black Widow, but Scarlett Johansson isn’t done with the MCU yet. Though her character in Avengers: Endgame dies and gets her solo appearance this year, the actress is set to return for another superpowered venture.
While Wanda’s loving manifestation of the character died in Westview when the hex was mined, he didn’t leave until he had restored the memories of the White Vision, meaning the original version of the character reminisces about everything about his past life Thano’s death reminds him. Where he went remains to be seen.
Captain America does not die in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At least he doesn’t die on screen. The last we see of Cap is in Avengers: Endgame when, after the Avengers’ fight with Thanos, he goes back in time and lives a long happy life with true love Peggy Carter.
In the comics, Yelena served primarily as an antagonist to the Avengers. But in the MCU it was heavily hinted that she will succeed Natasha and become the new Black Widow when the Avengers next gather.
Of course, Marvel’s schedule has shifted quite a bit, but on May 25, 2022, Murphy stated that the mystery film in question was in fact Secret Wars. But before you get too excited, he adds that due to multiple delays over the last few years, there’s no way the next Avengers movie could be out in May 2024.
In the mid-credits scene of Black Widow, Yelena, the breakout character played by Florence Pugh, was put on the trail of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who arched on the Renner multi-episode spanning -Fronted Disney+ show that started this week.
